Kantha is a sanskrit word for rags and this craft has been evolved from the eastern region of India specially in Bangladesh and indian region of West Bengal and In thar region of Rajasthan too. It is a centuries-old practice of stitching layer of old saree, cloth scraps covering with layer of new fabric and some embroideries on the surface to give it new and aesthetic look. It involves rows of running stitches with alternative colors along the edge. The purpose of using old clothes is to reuse them and it was believed old clothes provide protection to the new born babies, more the layer of fabric more warmer quilt it would be.  The designs and the motifs involved in Kantha are mostly inspired from nature, animals, geometric shapes. Kantha was used as a means of self-expression by both rural and urban and portrays their day to day activities.  On the basis of quantity of fabric used, size of stitches, pattern, and embroidery, kantha is distinguished into 7 different types including lep kantha, sujani kantha, Baiton Kantha, Oaar Kantha, Archilata, Durjani and Rumal Kantha.
